About Itara Journals

Itara Journals is a Pan-African initiative committed to strengthening the visibility of African research through credible, sustainable, and well-supported academic journals.

What “Itara” Means

Itara is a Rufumbira word meaning lamp or light.

The name reflects our vision of strengthening the visibility of African research through credible and enduring scholarly journals. It symbolises visibility, guidance, and the strengthening of trusted platforms through which African knowledge can be published, discovered, and respected. In this way, Itara is more than a name. It is a statement of purpose: to light the path toward stronger, more visible, and more credible African scholarship.

Our Purpose

Itara Journals exists to help bring African research into clearer visibility through credible and sustainable journals. We recognise that many institutions and journal founders face challenges such as limited infrastructure, weak support systems, and a lack of training in journal management and scholarly publishing. Our purpose is to help address these gaps by providing affordable, reliable, and supportive journal development, migration, and management services that strengthen the future of African scholarship.

Our Vision

Our vision is to build a strong Pan-African scholarly publishing ecosystem that advances the visibility, credibility, and long-term sustainability of African research. We envision a future in which African scholarship is supported by trusted journals that make knowledge more discoverable, respected, and influential across the continent and beyond. Through this vision, Itara Journals seeks to contribute to a more connected, visible, and enduring African research landscape.

Our Mission

Our mission is to strengthen the visibility of African research by building and supporting credible academic journals that meet strong publishing standards. We are committed to creating platforms where African scholarship can be discovered, trusted, and recognised for its value. In doing so, we aim to promote academic excellence, knowledge sharing, and stronger journal systems that support the long-term growth of scholarly publishing across Africa.
